The Dolphins are in the Playoffs!?

I hope everyone enjoyed their holidays with loved ones over the weekend.  The Kansas City Chiefs wrapped up a smile and gave it to every Dolphins fan in the world last night.

With KC's victory over the Broncos last night, the Miami Dolphins have clinched a playoff spot.

This is the first playoff berth since 2008 and only the second in 14 seasons.

14 seasons!  That's a lot of years.

Who would've thought that after starting the season 1-4, the Dolphins would even be close to making the playoffs?  Especially when that one victory was over the Browns in a game the Dolphins should have lost.

Then the Dolphins went on a roll, winning 9 of their last 10 games, and steamrolling to a playoff berth.  What has been so great about this run is they have found so many different ways to win close games:

Mail Day: Serious Niekro

I hope everyone is enjoying their Sunday, perhaps enjoying some football or family time.

I don't usually enjoy posting on Sunday as I believe it should be a day of rest and relaxation but sitting at my desktop I figured what the heck.

These three cards arrived in the same package as the Smoltz cards from my previous post but these instead feature ol' "Knucksie", Phil Niekro.

2014 Panini Golden Age Phil Niekro
First up is this Niekro from 2014 Panini Golden Age.  Although this is just a generic Knucksie, I like the blue highlights of the card matching the blue accents on Niekro's unaffiliated uniform.  Niekro is also wearing his competitive face for this photo.

Mail Day: Smiling Smoltzie

In an effort to once again grow my now dwindled collection of Braves, I decided I need to get back into the trade game.  I updated my collections on Beckett and sent a few trade offers.  Happily, I was able to close the deal on some of these trades and those involved in my bartering were quick to send their sides of the trades.

One user sent me a nice smattering of John Smoltz cardboard to kick off that collection.  I always had more Glavine cards than I did of Smoltz and Maddux so I this trade hit the mark on making progress in my binder.  I received close to 20 Smoltz cards and I present to you my fave 5 of the deal:

2011 Topps Lineage Diamond Anniversary Smoltz #94
I love this 2015 Inspired Play insert featuring Kimbrel and Smoltz.  Kimbrel was our most dominant closer since Smoltz and holds the record for most saves by a Brave.  I was sad to see him traded away but it was a necessary move for the front office to make in order to start rebuilding the franchise.

Rando Pack: 2007 Topps Updates & Highlights

I found a box buried in my closet that was loaded with some unorganized rando cards.  But among them was a nice little surprise.  Four unopened packs of baseball cards.  You know what that means:

2007 Topps Update
So apparently my scanner likes to trim off the top of the cards when they are lined up against the leading edge of the scanner.  The rookie card of Kyle Kendrick was probably the biggest name of this six card scan.  How about a little a trivia?

Retail Blaster Fun: 2016 Donruss Mega Box

So for the past few years, I have been really good about passing the card aisle in Wal-Mart.  A few times I managed to pause and walk through the aisle, giving a casual glance over to the ever shrinking sports section and the growing Magic: The Gathering area, but never jumping in on the impulse buy because I was no longer a collector.

Of course that all changed now that I decided to get back into the hobby.  I went to pick up some lunch on Thursday and I knew it was time to visit the card aisle.  I grabbed a wrap from the deli and went to the place where I spent a lot of time and money in years past.  What to choose?  Well since it is football season I went with this:

2016 Donruss Mega Box
I think the retro logo and the addition of 2 hobby packs of Gridiron Kings is what enticed me to buy this box over the box of Topps football I was contemplating.  Well let's get onto the contents, and as before, I will score this baby:
