Shameless Plug: Here I Go Again...

...with another shameless advertising plug for some of my cards on COMC.  This post will focus on the cards I have for sale from the year 1987.

But first, let's set the mood with a super smash-hit from '87:

Such a memorable video with the sensual Tawny Kitaen showing off her flexibility on top of a couple of Jaguars (the cars, not the big cats or football players from Jacksonville).

Ok, onto the cards:

Shameless Plug: The Oldest I Have

There is a ton of vintage cards listed on COMC for sale but unfortunately, I am not the one selling them.  So in this shameless plug I am listing the oldest cards I do have for sale on the site.

1969 Topps Deckle Edge - Rick Monday
This 1969 Deckle Edge card is the oldest card I have listed on COMC.  Isn't this the most beautifully centered card you've ever seen? Ok, not so much.

Shameless Plug: Randy Johnson

So I have over 1000 cards listed on COMC for sale and I figured I will do some shameless advertising on my blog.  So for today's plug, how about a few cards of the Big Unit himself, Randy Johnson.

*Clicking the pics will open COMC in a new window* wink, wink, nudge, nudge

1992 Diamond Kings
1992 was the first year Randy led the league in strikeouts.  He also led the league in batters hit by pitch that season.  Ouch.

One Blaster of 2012 Topps Update

I figured it was about time I contributed another post to my blog.  So how about a little post of this 2012 Topps Update blaster I picked up this afternoon.

Wow, look at all the gold.  I don't think I have ever received this many serial numbered parallels in a blaster box before.  I also got two packs worth of the Walmart blue border cards but no need to show them here.

The Gift of Giving

It's been a few days since I last posted because working 12-hour shifts has a way of putting a damper on one's free time.

I had about 3000 cards sitting around in a box and I was wondering what do do with all of them.  These are mostly common, low-value cards that really aren't worth selling unless I sold them in bulk and I almost went that route but I decided to do something else with them.

Today's Pack:  2011 Press Pass Football

I have griped about the eclectic nature of 2011 Press Pass before and I pretty much feel the same way after opening this pack.  I guess the Face to Face insert and Rahim Moore parallel would be the highlights of the pack.

Today's Pack:  2008 Upper Deck X

Either Upper Deck seriously overproduced "X" in 2008 and/or it didn't sell very well because if you have ever purchased a repack box, it more than likely will contain at least one pack of 2008 Upper Deck X.

Check Out My Canes: The Mad Stork

Out of all the former Miami Hurricanes football players that I collect, I realized that my collection was missing one of the greatest Hurricanes to ever play in the NFL.  So I hit up COMC to add some cards of this all-time great to my Hurricanes collection.

A day after the Dolphins were dismantled at the hands of the Houston Texans, this pack brings me a little solace as the Ray Lewis card heads to my personal collection.  The Joe Webb card on the bottom is your standard Score glossy parallel.

Today's Pack:  2008 Upper Deck Series 2

This was a nice fat pack with 18 cards.  2008 Upper Deck had some very nice photography that lends itself well to a card designed without a border.  I especially like the photo on the Bill Hall card.

I'm Really Gonna Miss Chipper Jones Next Season

In case you missed it, the Braves were down by 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th when Chipper comes to bat with 2 on and 2 out.  Chipper came through once again by hitting a 3-run walkoff bomb to right-center to prevent a sweep at the hands of the Phillies.  Hopefully this will help kickstart the Braves for the remainder of the season.

Maybe this photo will end up on a card someday.

The Return of A.P.A.D.

So I decided to bring back my "A Pack A Day" series that I used a lot in the earlier portion of 2011.  I love ripping packs as it is a great way to pass the time as well as serve for some easy filler posts for the blog.  Today's pack rip features a retail pack of 2011 Topps Prime.

Nothing much in this pack.  I did manage to pull a Dolphins rookie card but it was a card I already had in my possession.

Let's hope Miles Austin does well Wednesday night for the sake of my fantasy team.

The Card Hobbyist August in Review

Post Count: 19

Nineteen posts make August my most prolific blogging month so far this year, granted that Gint-A-Cuffs contributed a lot to that number

Total Pageviews: 927

The blog received nearly double the amount of pageviews in August than it did in July.  It's amazing the difference a few more posts can make.  If you write it, they will come.

So here are some cards that Adam from ARPsmith's Sportscard Obsession was kind enough to send my way in exchange for some Ginter to help him on his journey to complete his set.  I really lack the motivation and writing ability to give this post proper elaboration so you won't see many words once the colorful pictures begin.

The Hardships of a Fickle Team Collector

Once again I am changing the way I collect cards.  After reading this post on All the Way to the Backstop and this post by Capewood, I realized that I had the same problem they face as team collectors.

Being a huge Atlanta Braves fan, I ultimately wanted to get my hands on any card that featured a player in a Braves jersey.  As a kid, whenever I ripped opened a pack and saw the Braves jersey on a card, I was stoked but nowadays, when I flip through my binders, I only get that feeling when I see certain cards while all the other cards leave me with a feeling of apathy.

What's in the Cards for the NFC West in 2012?

So I picked up a couple of football blasters from Wal-Mart this weekend and I thought it would be a fun little idea to let the cards make their own predictions on how the NFL season will pan out.  I opted for one blaster of 2012 Score and one blaster of 2012 Topps Football.  Here's a simple scoring system I put into place for cards to make their predictions:

Base card = 1 point
Insert/Parallel = 2 points
#ed Parallel = 3 points
Variation SP = 4 points
Hit Card (relic, auto, manupatch) = 5 points

Let's do this division by division shall we.  First up, the NFC West

San Francisco 49'ers

4 Base Cards
1 Parallel (NaVorro Bowman glossy)
In the Cards Prediction Score = 6 points

With two kickers and two defensive players, the cards predict that the defending NFC West champs will have to rely heavily on their defense and special teams as well as solid play from QB Alex Smith in order to be successful in 2012

Check Out My Canes: QB Edition - How the University of Miami Became to be Known as "Quarterback U"

It's felt like an eternity since my last post and over a month since I started writing about this mail day.  It's about time I finish this thing up.

1993 Skybox Premium #68, 1994 Stadium Club #587, 1994 Upper Deck #273
The string of successful Miami Hurricanes quarterbacks began with Jim Kelly in 1979.  Kelly was an all-state quarterback from East Brady High School in Pennsylvania.  Kelly dreamed of playing quarterback for Penn State but then Penn State Head Coach Joe Paterno only wanted Kelly to come in and play linebacker.  Kelly instead opted to join a struggling Miami Hurricanes program which was in dire need of success after a decade of futility.

Check Out My Canes: QB Edition - Erickson Caps off Decade of Excellence

1991 Pacific #519 (RC) and 1994 Collector's Choice #364

Craig Erickson was a highly ranked quarterback prospect coming out of Cardinal Newman High School in West Palm Beach, Florida.  Erickson was favoring joining the Florida Gators out of high school but Miami coach Jimmy Johnson managed to sway him in 1987 to join the Hurricanes.  During his freshman and sophomore years, Erickson was a backup to incumbent starter Steve Walsh.  In 1989, after the departure of Steve Walsh and the arrival of new head coach Dennis Erickson (no relation), Erickson stepped into the starting role at quarterback and added his name to the growing list of successful Miami quarterbacks.

The Card Hobbyist June in Review

Just a quick review of the blog, collecting, and sports for the month of June.

Total Posts: 5 (not including this one of course)

Total Page Views: 585

Once again, this may seem like a drop in the bucket compared to most of the card blogs out there and is most likely the result of my meager post count but I still get that warm, fuzzy feeling knowing that I do have readers out there.

PC Card Spotlight: Lee Maye - 1965 Topps

It may not be the most mint condition card in my collection but here's a Maye card for a May day.  Arthur Lee Maye played with the Braves from 1959-1965.  Maye dominated minor league pitching during his early career but that success never really translated into the big leagues mainly due to injuries.

Maye enjoyed his best season with the Braves in 1964 when he hit .304, drove in 74 runs, and led the league in doubles with 44.  The Braves repaid Maye for his successful 1964 season by promptly trading him to the Astros in May 1965.  Arthur Lee Maye passed away in 2002 at the age of 67.

Besides baseball, Maye had another talent.  He was a successful singer as well.

Pack Rippin': 3 packs of 2012 Topps Series 1

I don't have a snazzy introduction to this post so here is a little tidbit of baseball history:

Four years ago, on this date, Greg Maddux won the 350th game of his career as the Padres defeated the Rockies 3-2.  Maddux became the ninth pitcher in Major League history to reach the 350 win milestone.

"It seems like he's inside your mind with you. When he knows you're not going to swing, he throws a straight one. He sees into the future. It's like he has a crystal ball hidden inside his glove." - Wade Boggs

Now lets dive into these packs.

Joey Votto!  This vote surprised me a little bit.  Of course I wasn't expecting ARod or Woodrow Wilson to win this vote but I fully expected Ken Griffey Jr. would get the most votes.  But you all proved me wrong by voting for Votto's rookie card.

Votto has become the face of the Reds franchise thanks to the 10-year/$225 million contract extension he recently signed, the largest contract in Reds history and one of the largest ever in baseball history.

Listia Pick-Ups

Over the past month I made quite a few card pickups on Listia.  If you've never used Listia, it's like eBay but uses a point system instead of a currency.  Basically you put something up for auction and in return you receive points that can be used in other auctions on the site.  It's a great low cost way to pick up some cards for your collections.

Here are a few cards I picked up recently from Listia auctions:

Pack Rippin': 2 packs of 2008 Topps

Why is that these repack boxes always contain so many 2008 packs?  Was there a small bubble in the baseball card market that year that forced manufacturers to produce extra packs?  Either way I decided to rip into two 2008 packs, one pack of 2008 Topps Series 1 and one pack of 2008 Topps Update.

Before I get to the nominees for the Community Choice Collection, I did manage to pull a Braves card from the pack of 2008 Update:

Kevin, aka The Diamond King, was kind enough to offer up a free lot of Braves cards to the first reader to post a claim to it.  And being the sucker for free cards that I am, I jumped at the opportunity and Kevin did not disappoint.

I have nearly 1,000 Braves cards in my collection so it was quite the surprise when I opened the package of 31 cards (he only promised 25 cards by the way) and saw that every card that Kevin sent me was a card that I did not previously own.  Well done Diamond King, well done.

Enough of my gushing, here are the cards he sent me:

Community Choice Collection Winner #7

Garrett Atkins!  Once again an awesome photograph wins over the hearts of collectors.  This a great shot.  How often to you get to see the pitcher, catcher, batter, and umpire all on one card?  It's almost like watching an instant replay on a broadcast rather than looking at a static baseball card.  Good job collectors.

Make sure you check out the Community Choice Collection page to see all your winners.

PC Card Spotlight: 1967 Topps Norm Evans

In 1965, Norm Evans was drafted in the 14th round of AFL Draft by the Houston Oilers.  The 6'5" 250-pounder from TCU only spent one season in Houston before he was picked up my the Miami Dolphins in the 1966 expansion draft.  The 1966 Dolphins struggled as expected for an expansion team going 3-11 in their inaugural season.  Evans once joked about the Dolphins receiving a standing ovation that year from the home crowd once they finally converted two first downs in a row.

However, head coach Don Shula would turn this expansion team into one of the premier squads of the AFL in the early 70's and Norm Evans was a large part of that success.  Evans spent 10 years playing right tackle for the Dolphins and during that stint he played in 3 Super Bowls (winning two of them) and was selected to the Pro Bowl in 1972 and 1974.

Half of a 2012 Topps Jumbo Pack.

Braves getting beat by the Mets (again).

Good enough reason to rip a pack.

Catching Up: CCC Winner and a Mail Day with some Ginter Happiness

I haven't been able to post much this past week due to a lot of distractions so I'm gonna cram all the stuff I wanted to post about this past week into this post.

First I'll start it off with the winner of the Community Collection Vote #5:

Pack Rippin': 2006 Topps

In this round of Pack Rippin' I decided to break open a cello pack of 2006 Topps.  This pack holds 22 cards...

What a disappointing pack.

I got 22 base cards.   No inserts, parallels, or rookies to bring a sparkle to my eye.  But there will still be a vote for a card to make it into the Community Choice Collection so I hand-picked the 4 cards from the pack with players who I believe put together a pretty good 2006 seasons.  First candidate is...

Community Collection Winner #4

And the 4th card to be added to the Community Choice Collection is...

..Miguel Tejada Black Border!

Another great photo on this card.  While Miguel is the central focus of the card, it is the other elements that make this such a cool photo.  The scoreboard in the background, the late afternoon sun, the pitcher delivering the pitch in the blurred foreground, and the nice complement given by the black border make this a really nice piece of cardboard (minus the dust specks of course).

Community Choice Collection Winner #3

Wow! This was the closest vote yet as the winner was decided by a single vote.  A lot of cards received votes but two cards were neck and neck down the stretch.  Here are the two cards that got the most votes:
