How "Reap the Heap" Works

Occasionally I will add a card to the heap.  In order to "Reap the Heap" all you have to do is leave a comment that you want the heap of cards and that you have one (or more) of the cards on my wantlists to send to me.  That's it, just one card (or more) from my wantlists for the entire heap of cards.  First come, first serve of course on claiming the cards.

Reap the Heap #1: Baseball Sacrilege

Okay, I realize putting a Yankee player right next to a Red Sox player is sacrilege, but how can you resist this young, spectacled Bernie showing off mid-swing?

In 2002, Ed Reed was drafted 24th overall by the Baltimore Ravens. When the season rolled around, Reed immediately made his presence felt.  As a rookie in 2002,  Reed started all 16 games for the Ravens and finished the season with 71 tackles, 5 interceptions, and 1 sack.

2010 Allen & Ginter Blaster Box Crack

I couldn't resist buying the last blaster box of 2010 Allen & Ginter's from the shelves of the local Wal-Mart.  This is just a little tease for me with the 2011 version being released very soon.

Rookies

Luis Durango (OF) has struggled mightily this season at Triple-A.  The Panamanian speedster was designated for assignment by the Padres on July 21, 2011.

Sergio Santos (P) was originally drafted by the Diamondbacks as a shortstop out of high school in 2002.  After signing with the White Sox in 2009, Santos was converted to a pitcher and is now serving as the White Sox's closer.  He has 14 saves so far in 2011.

Chris Johnson (3B) enjoyed a solid 2010 rookie campaign while batting .308 with 11 homers.  However, he has struggled so far in 2011 just like the rest of the Astros lineup.

Mike Leake (P) got off to a fast start as a rookie in 2010 going 5-0 in his first 11 starts but his effectiveness waned due to shoulder fatigue later in the season.  So far in 2011, Leake is 6-4 with a 4.19 ERA.

Chris Pettit (OF) is still waiting to receive any kind of meaningful MLB play time.  He only appeared in 10 games for the Angels in 2009 and only 1 game in 2011.  Pettit is currently trying to work his way back from an injury that forced him to miss the entire 2010 season.

Short Prints

Picked up this McLouth for my Braves PC.

Minis
Picked up a Delmon Young black bordered mini and his A&G back mini.  The LaRoche is also an A&G back mini while the Beltre is just the normal mini.  I've never typed the word "mini" so may times in the span of three sentences.

Inserts

Got one of these in each pack and I gotta say that I really don't like the look of these cards.  These cards just bore me for some reason.  Heck, even the newsboy on right looks bored out of his mind.

This is a Baseball Highlights insert of the Mets' Daniel Murphy.  He looks like a kid trying to chase down the ice cream truck in this picture.

And for the finale, some of the non-sports minis

Another card for the inaugural card heap.  This time it is a Baker from Germany who went to the Rockies and eventually became a Cubbie.

Piles, Stacks, and Heaps...Oh My!

I'm going to try out something that is being done by at least a couple different bloggers.  I first learned of it from BA Benny's blog who got the idea from the Nacho Grande blog.  It is called the "Trade Stack" on the Nacho Grande blog and called the "Trade Pile" on B.A. Benny's blog.

And since imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, I'd like to introduce the "Reap the Heap"

But before I get the "Reap the Heap" started, please take a minute to look at Nacho Grande's Trade Stack and B.A. Benny's Trade Pile

Let's get the ball (err..heap) rolling........

So if you want this Halladay and his crazy-looking eyes, then go ahead and leave a comment to "Reap the Heap" or you can wait and watch the heap grow.

One Year Ago Today....

Landon Donovan scored a goal in waning seconds of the USA vs Algeria soccer match to help the U.S. advance to the next round of the World Cup.  Although I am a soccer fan only once every 4 years, this goal is one of the most memorable sports moments I have ever witnessed.

Below is a video of Landon's goal with the call being made my Andres Cantor.  Although the call is in Spanish, there is no denying the emotion that is evident in Cantor's voice.

And here are some reactions of fans from around the world:

Braves Mail Day

A big thank you to Etmillo and Myclampdx over at the Sports Card Forum for the trades allowing me to pick up a little over 60 cards to add to my ever growing Braves collection.  The majority of the cards were base cards so I'm not going to spend too much time on this post but I will just show off the rookies, inserts, and parallels that came in with the trades.

Random PC Card Spotlight: Javier Vazquez - 2009 Ticket to Stardom

Javier Vazquez arguably pitched the best season of his career in 2009 for Atlanta.  That year Vazquez won 15 games with an ERA of 2.87 and he averaged 9.8 strikeouts per 9 innings.  Vazquez finished 4th in the Cy Young voting in 2009.

Career Wins above Replacement Value:  35.5 (14 seasons)

*Vazquez was traded to the Yankees by the Braves along with Boone Logan in exchange for Mike Dunn, Melky Cabrera, and Arodys Vizcaino after the 2009 season

2011 Topps Series 2, Hanger Pack #2

Cracking open my second hanger pack of 2011 Topps Series 2.

Let's jump right in with the rookies....

Pedro Beato (P) got off to an amazing debut as a rookie by pitching scoreless baseball in his first 18.2 innings in the major leagues.  However in his last 8.2 innings, Beato has given up 13 runs on 14 hits.

Josh Rodriguez (SS) appeared in only 7 games for the Pirates in 2011.  He went 1 for 12 before being designated for assisgnment by the Pirates.  The Cleveland Indians claimed him off of waivers on April 29, 2011.

Samuel Deduno (P) only made 2 appearances for the Padres this year before being sent back down to Triple-A.

Joe Paterson (P) has pitched well for the D'backs so far in 2011.  The young lefty has appeared in 31 games this season posting an ERA of 3.24

Fewer rookies in this pack when compared to the first hanger pack I opened.  Now let's look at the inserts and parallels....

  • Topps 60 Jacoby Ellsbury
  • Target Hanger Pack Exclusive Pedro Alvarez
  • Toppstown Carl Crawford
  • Diamond Duos of Adrian Beltre and Elvis Andrus

  • Diamond Stars Miguel Cabrera
  • Diamond Anniversary Parallel Adam Wainwright

  • 60 Years of Topps Ernie Banks (regular back)
  • Kimball Champions mini Hank Greenberg
  • Before There Was Topps #BTT7

Revamped Braves Collection Page

I didn't really like the way my Braves PC was organized on this site so I have been spending some time reformatting that page.

Here's the structure of the new page:

  • Basic collection statistics at the top
  • All cards are listed by player in order by number of cards owned then alphabetically
  • Only players which have 3 or more cards in my collection are listed (except for Lemke and Hubbard)
  • Photos of parallels, inserts, autos, and memorabilia for each player (if I have them of course)

Check it out if you would like.  The link is at the top of all blog pages.

Braves Mail Day

Just a quick mail day post showing a few cards I picked up for my Braves PC.  Nothing real big here but I love receiving stuff for my PC no matter how small.  Big thanks to Crosby and LittleA from Sports Card Forum for the trades.

Here are some inserts and a parallel....

And now the rookies.....

Bill McCarthy batted .354 for Richmond in 2004 which was good enough for a rookie card I guess.  His career went downhill from there as he hasn't played since 2007 and never made it to the show.

Clint Sammons was a true homegrown Brave.  He was born in Decatur, Ga and attended Parkview High school (the same school that produced Jeff Francoeur).  Unfortunately his professional career has not panned out and he is currently employed by the Marlins Triple-A affiliate.

Kris Medlen was very impressive for the Braves out of the bullpen and as a spot starter in 2010.  The California native went 6-2 with a 3.68 era while logging over 100 innings before his season was cut short by Tommy John's surgery.  Medlen hopes to return to the Braves around mid-August.

Johnny Venters is currently posting some historic numbers so far in the 2011 season.  Venters is currently 4-0 with a .738 WHIP and an eye-popping 0.44 ERA all while pitching the most innings as a reliever in the Majors.

Tommy Hanson is beginning the develop into the ace that Braves fans have been waiting for.  Hanson is currently 8-4 with a 2.48 ERA and is averaging 9.6 strikeouts per 9 innings.  In his last start, Hanson fanned 14 Astros in 7 innings pitched.
